Abstract of Speech

Vehicle vibration dampers play an important role in the design and tuning of the vehicle’s vertical dynamics. On the one hand vehicle safety is improved by choosing a stiff damper setup; on the other hand a smoother layout enhances vehicle comfort. Being one of the most complex components in the vertical dynamics due to multiple variations in general damper layout, valve design or dimensions, the design and final system integration of shock absorbers is time and cost consuming. The speech at the International Automotive Congress shows a new method to estimate maximum damper force depending on different road surfaces, vehicle velocities and spring/damper setups.

After an introduction into the theory of vertical dynamics and vibrational damping, the effects of damper and spring force in different driving maneuvers is examined in order to determine the most appropriate maneuvers for further analysis. According to a method designed by Prof. Mitschke and Prof. Wallentowitz to evaluate vehicle safety and comfort, an adapted method based on simple vertical dynamics analogous model is proposed to get an idea on the statistically maximum achievable damper force in an early stage of vehicle damper development. The influence of vehicle velocity and different road surfaces is further investigated. With the aid of the available test benches and proving grounds at the InstitutfürKraftfahrzeuge from RWTH Aachen University, a test vehicle has been examined to provide vehicle parameters for the parameterization and validation of a multibody vehicle simulation model. In the multibody simulation environment ADAMS/Car the proposed method is validated in a realistic simulation environment.

The proposed method serves in the design of a development tool which aims to optimize vehicle vertical dynamics. The presentation will show the full range of current development work including the method design, vehicle tests, vehicle model parameterization and vertical dynamics simulations in a multibody environment.
