Prof. Dr. Maximilian Schwalm(马克西米连-施瓦尔姆博士教授)

Electro mobility  – Status quo of electric vehicles and the important need for an adequate charging grid

Speaker Introduction

Maximilian Schwalm obtained his PhD in Psychology from the University of Saarbrücken in cooperation with BMW AG in 2008.  From 2008 to 2013 he worked for BMW AG in different positions in the R&D, Advanced Development, and Quality Assurance. Since 2013, he is Professor for “Driver Experience and Performance” at the Institute for Automotive Engineering at the RWTH Aachen University. His research focus is in the assessment of vehicle systems and components from a user perspective and the optimization of user-infrastructure interaction.

Abstract of speech

Electro mobility in Europe is currently facing a fundamental challenge. The technical maturity of electric vehicle concepts is already rather high– but the question of a suitable public charging infrastructure for the consumers is yet to be answered. Without a sufficient infrastructure, the planned expansion of electro mobility in the volume vehicle segments is not possible. Therefore, in Germany different initiatives were launched to set up national rapid charging grids. The key question is – how should an adequate and nationwide expansion of quick charger look like and how can that be planned efficiently on the national level. In the research project SLAM, a public available planning tool was developed at the RWTH under the leadership of Institute for Automotive Engineering (ika). This enables planners and decision-makers that are involved in the expansion of national rapid charging grids to find location potentials and to include this geographically location in their current plans.
